Corruption rules supreme at the Cheluvamba Hospital
The Cheluvamba Womens and Children’s Hospital, which has a history spanning seven decades, of late has become synonymous with corruption. The 400 bedded hospital is starved of doctors and other para medical staff, and lacks even basic equipment X-ray unit, Ultrasound Scanning unit, blood bank.
One has to pay bribe even to get an entry into the hospital. When this correspondent reached the gate of the hospital, the guard gave a stare and refused entry. On being told about the purpose of visit, the unperturbed chap demanded Rs 20 for the ‘favour’. The many visitors loitering outside the gate also had similar tales to narrate. The corruption assumes various forms depending upon the situation. The ‘tips’ for seeing through a safe delivery varies from Rs 100 to Rs 500 depending upon the gender of the newborn.
For abortion, one has to pay Rs 100. If you dont oblige to the demands of the D-group staff, getting out of the hospital becomes an impossible task. When the attention of Dr Damayanthi, the Medical Officer of the Hospital is drawn to the corruption menace, she feigns ignorance.
“We will certainly take action if we receive complaints,”she told Deccan Herald.
Adding to the chaos is the acute shortage of doctors and nursing staff.
