WORKSHOP ON CHILD ABUSE BEGINS
A day-long regional workshop on issues related to trafficking of children for commercial sexual exploitation and medical examination of sexually abused victi-mes, for medical officers, organised under the joint auspices of UNICEF and Indian Medical Association (IMA) began this morning at Hotel Sandesh The Prince.
Speaking after inaugurating the workshop, Mysore University Vice-Chancellor Prof. J. Shashidhara Prasad opined that poverty is one of the main reason behind sexual exploitation of children. Awareness should dawn on the parents and teachers too should be dealt sternly if they are involved. A cell was constituted in the Mysore University to register sexual harassment of women. Only two to three per cent of the cases involving sexual abuse of children are probed under law. Doctors too should take a tough stand and reveal the truth during medical examination of victims, he suggested.
JSS Mahavidyapeetha Executive Secretary B.N. Betkerur observed that India is still not shinning as projected. Unless poverty and the associated problems like child abuse are prevented, the country cannot progress. Doctors should be impartial and uphold social justice, he advised.
Over 50 medical officers are participating in the workshop. IMA Hon. Joint Secretary Dr. Dharam Prakash, IMA HQS Secretary General Dr. S.N. Mishra, Professor and Head, Department of Surgery, JSS Medical College and Hon. Director IMA AKN Sinha Institute, New Delhi Dr. S.B. Vasanth Kumar, are participating in the workshop.
