Dr. Nataraj in his speech said that there are 2.7 million HIV patients in India and one lakh in Karnataka. In the order of number of HIV patients, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu rank high and Karnataka is in the third place. Now-a-days there are more victims in rural areas, most of them truck drivers, in the age group of 18-25. The disease is not originated from rural area but has spread from urban areas. More awareness is required in rural areas side by side with urban areas, he opined.
Dr. Umesh Kamath, who spoke, said that AIDS is a social problem. If awareness is not created, more people will become victims. If timely treatment is given, further aggravation can be avoided, he felt.
Dr. K.R. Kamath spoke on control and prevention of the disease. The exhibition enlightens visitors about the way the disease spreads and how it can be prevented.
