More About Autonomy
Mysore Medical College, the oldest Medical Educational institution in Karnataka, has been accorded autonomy status by the State Government. The College would be renamed as the Mysore Medical College and Research Institute (MCC and RI). Though the newly started Medical Colleges, including the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences were granted autonomy status recently, the 73 year old Mysore Medical College had been waiting for the status for the past few years. Principal Dr B C Vastrad told UNI that the order was received only three days back after recent visit of M N Vidyashankar Secretary Department of Information and Technology and Biotechnology and incharge of Medical Education along with Mr Ramananda Shetty Director,
Medical Education. A section of the medical community opposed the autonomy status for they feared that the Institute would lose its brand name and would be re-named as the Krishnarajendra Institute of Medical Sciences to pay homage to the Maharaja of Mysore Nalwadi Krishnaraja Wodyer, who
established the institute in Bangalore in 1924, however, they are happy that the brand name has retained despite granting of autonomy. When the Institute was shifted to Mysore in 1930 the medical officer of K R Hospital was appointed its principal, a new building was constructed and provided with equipment and furniture at a cost of Rs 2.85 lakhs by the government. The number of seats was restricted to 30 initially and the duration of course was five and a half years with effect from June 1945, the number of seats increased to 50 in 1947 and later to 100. A postgraduate diploma course in heart related diseases was started and hostel for women was set up in 1945. The autonomy would provide more freedom with regard to infrastructure and academic development of the institution. A Governing Council would be set up and it would
comprise medical education secretary and the principal, who henceforth would be referred to as Dean or Director. It would be headed by the Minister for Medical Education, the K R Hospital attached the institution, would be upgraded soon with more facilities, he added.

MRC Hospital Mega Eye Camp
A free eye screening and cataract operation camp organised under the joint auspices of Rotary Mysore and Mysore Race Club (MRC) Charitable Trust began this morning at MRC Eye Hospital in Siddarthanagar here.
About 300 patients had lined up in the morning and nearly 1,000 are expected from the city and districts of Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Kodagu. Screening of eyes will go on till evening and those deemed necessary will undergo free cataract surgery with fitting of intraocular lens tomorrow.
Past District Governor of Rotary R. Guru inaugurated the camp by lighting the lamp.
Presiding over the function, M.A. Manjunath, President, Rotary Mysore, said that the Rotary Mysore was started in 1944 with a service motto and has been serving the people with blood donation and eye screening camps given top priority. About 500 tricycles have been distributed to disabled people, along with artificial limbs.
A round-the-clock blood bank is coming up at Chandrakala Hospital in Vijayanagar. Rotary, in association with Star of Mysore collected about Rs. 69 lakh in 90 days for the tsunami victims and also built a colony at Mudaliarkuppam, recalled Manjunath saying that he himself had donated blood 65 times so far.
Dr. C.D. Sreenivasamurthy, Chairman of Hospital Committee welcomed. Trustees Nanaiah, C.P. Chinnappa, Dr. M.N. Doreswamy, Rohinikumar Babu, Sanathkumar, C.N.N. Murthy, Community Service Director Khalim Mohammed, Rtn. D. Ram Singh and Rtn. Venkatesh were present.

Mysore Medical College Now Autonomous
Autonomy has been granted to the 82-year-old Mysore Medical College (MMC). The State Government has issued the related order on Jan. 17.
Dr. B.C. Vastrad, Principal of the College, disclosed to Star of Mysore yesterday that the Government's order was registered at the office of the District Registrar on the same day and the grant of autonomy was made official.
Although the Secretary of the Department of Medical Education, during his visit to the college on Dec. 30 last, had assured that the Government's order would be sent before Jan. 3, the process was delayed by 15 days due to some administrative hurdles.
The Mysore Medical College will now be rechristened as 'Mysore Medical College and Research Institute.'
Further, the authorities of the institution will be free to take decisions meeting on shortages of staff in K.R. Hospital, recruiting personnel for overcoming the shortage of staff in the college, purchase of equipment needed for teaching as well as research, renovation of the college building, additions to the building, new furniture, purchase of medicines, expansion of medical services and other developmental projects, without waiting for Government's nod.

Medical Camp for Disabled Kids
A two-day massive medical check-up camp for disabled school children of the city began at K.R. Hospital this morning. Children of schools in city's North Zone were examined by the teams of doctors today. The check-up of children from South Zone will be done tomorrow.Dr. B.D. Satyanarayana, Medical Superintendent of the Hospital inaugurated the drive organised under the joint auspices of Zilla Panchayat, Department of Public Instruction, Block Education Offices of the two Zones. Nearly 1,000 disabled children of schools in the zone, their parents and teachers thronged the Hospital premises on the first day today for the special medical check-up.

DSS protests at K R Hospital
About 40 members of Dalit Sangharsha Samithi (DSS) began an indefinite protest in front of the KR Hospital Medical Superintendent's office this morning to pressing their demands that included supply of adequate medicines and appropriate equipment apart from setting right the hospital's management.They also accused an Ortho-paedic surgeon of malpractice and demanded action against him. They also sought recovery of medical expenses of Kariankaiah, Sunil and Nagaraja Nayaka from the doctor, alleging harming them with his wrong treatment. Bettaiah Kote led the stir.

PULSE POLIO DRIVE BEGINS
The first round of Pulse Polio drive for the year 2007 was launched today at 8 am by Zilla Panchayat President Raja-mma by administering Polio drops to children at the Maternity Hospital in V.V. Mohalla here. Deputy Commissioner S. Selvakumar, Corporation Commissioner Dr. K.N. Chandrashekhar and Hospital Medical Officer Dr. Bhageerathi were present.Three hundred Pulse Polio booths, including 10 mobile ones are functioning in city and will administer Polio drops to children below five years of age till 5 pm today. 1,200 volunteers belonging to Lions, Rotary and other organisations and staff from various hospitals
rendered their services. Four volunteers at each booth were administering Polio drops to children with 50 doctors overseeing the drive. State Nodal Officers of Pulse Polio drive from Bangalore, Dr. Parvathy, Dr. Uma and Nursing Superintendent Shantha supervised. Booths at bus stand, Railway Station, Zoo and Palace were administering Polio drops to the children of tourists. Booths were functioning at K.R. Hos-pital, Cheluvamba Hospital and Children's Hospital in city and at all the Primary Health Centres. City Corporation Statistics Officer Nanjundaswamy told Star of Mysore that the drive will cover 80 per cent children in the city today. A total of 1,565 Polio booths with 6,575 volunteers under district Health Officer Dr. Srinivas were pressed into service in the district. Teams of volunteers will pay a door-to-door visit to the houses in city from tomorrow till Jan. 10 to administer Polio drops to children below five years, who have missed the chance today.

Junior doctors still on warpath
The junior doctors working in various government hospitals will take out a protest march here on thursday demanding the karnataka government consider their long-pending demands. The march will commence at the Krishnarajendra hospital and pass through Irwin road, Ashoka road, K.R. Circle, Devaraj Urs road to reach the deputy commissioner's (dc) office, where the doctors will submit a memorandum to the DC.
The services at the government hospitals remained disrupted for the third successive day on wednesday, even as juniors boycotted work, disrupting medical services in hospitals. About 150 junior doctors including house surgeons and pg students continued to stage a dharna in front of the K.R. Hospital. Many patients were seen left in thelurch as their treatment at the out- patients block was delayed, as the senior doctors on duty were making desperate attempts to cope with the rush. On wednesday, 83 patients were admitted to the Krishnarajendra hospital and less than 10 patients were discharged, according to the front office staff.

Hospital staff questioned about defunct elevator
City MLA H.S. Shankarlinge gowda visited the government-run Krishnarajendra hospital on saturday and took the hospital authorities to task for not initiating steps to repair the elevators, causing inconvenience to the patients. The patients had complained that the elevators were not working because of poor maintenance and negligence of hospital authorities. "Athough they (patients) had complained torepair the lifts at the stone building and new building, the authorities did not act'', they had said.
Gowda who expressed disappointment over the state of facilities offered to the patients in the hospital premises directed them to set right the machine immediately. Hospital sources said the hospital had not paid the maintenance charges due to Chennai contractor since the last one year and therefore they did not turn up, resulting in the break down.

DC FLAGS OFF AIDS AWARENESS JATHA
Deputy Commissioner S. Selvakumar flagged off an awareness jatha from Mysore Medical College (MMC) premises here this morning as part of National Volunteers' Blood Donation Day and World AIDS Day.
Nursing students of K.R. Hospital, JSS Hospital and B.M. Hospital, office-bearers of Ashodaya Samanvaya Samithi, Asha Kirana Charitable Trust, RLHP, Kiriya Pushpa Kalyana Kendra, Government ITI students and others numbering about 300 took part in the jatha which passed through Shivarampet, K.R. Circle, Hardinge Circle and culminated at Nazarbad DHO Office where a function was held at the Doctor's Bhavan.
The participants held placards with legends 'Use Nirodh to control AIDS', 'Donate Blood and Save a Life' etc., and also distributed pamphlets to the passers-by to create awareness about AIDS prevention and the value of blood donation.
The jatha was organised jointly by the District Administration, Zilla Panchayat, District Health and Family Welfare Department, Mysore District Red Cross Society K.R. Hospital, District NSS and NCC Units, Mysore and Karnataka AIDS Prevention Institute, Karnataka State Haemophilia Society, Mysore Medical College, Mysore City Corporation and Indian Medical Association (IMA), Mysore Branch.

MYSORE MEDICAL COLLEGE GETS AUTONOMY
The Government has accorded the much-awaited autonomy to the Mysore Medical College in Mysore. The order to this effect will be issued on Tuesday (Jan. 2) as today and tomorrow are holidays. Already, Government Medical College and Dental College in Bangalore have got the autonomy. Now the head of the college will be empowered to take policy decisions and recruit teaching and other staff. The college can seek aid from other organisations directly.
Speaking to Star of Mysore this morning, MMC Principal Dr. B.C. Vastrad said that the IT/BT Secretary M.N. Vidya Shankar, who is also in-charge of Medical Education and Director of Medical Education Dr. Ramanand Shetty visited MMC and K.R. Hospital yesterday and held discussion with heads of all departments. The draft order is ready to grant autonomy and the official order along with the bye-laws are expected to reach on Tuesday. The MMC will be registered at the District Registrar's office, said Dr. Vastrad.
Bottlenecks
Referring to the recent visit of the Medical Council of India (MCI) team to MMC and K.R. Hospital, Dr. Vastrad said that a decision was taken at the yesterday's meeting to set right all bottlenecks cited by the MCI team within three months, before the team's next visit.
With autonomy in hand, the rectification process would be on a war-footing, leaving no stone unturned.
The Out-Patient Department in K.R. Hospital, teaching units and laboratories would also be streamlined, he said.
Benefits
Speaking about the benefits of autonomy, Dr. Vastrad said that it basically provides a free hand for execution of proposed developmental works.
A Governing Council will be constituted comprising the Medical Education Secretary and the Principal, who henceforth will be referred to as the Dean or Director. The Governing Council would be headed by the Medical Education Minister. The Council will immediately go in for filling up the shortage in teaching staff, as it will be vested with total powers for recruitment of teaching and other staff.
Associate Professors
MCI had suggested the introduction of the posts of Associate Professors, which was not there under the Government purview. Now it can be created and filled up. Purchase of equipments will be done directly without approaching the Government as the budgetary allocation would also be increased, he said.
As substantial space has been reportedly wasted in the K.R. Hospital, it has been suggested to employ a medical architect for efficient utilisation of the available space, Dr. Vastrad said.
